THE SPACE BETWEEN MY FINGERS

“The Space Between My Fingers” is a collection of submitted poems from May of 2025. Inspired by Urban Voices/L’Echo de la Ville, a Toronto District School Board publication from my youth, I wanted to make a collection of poetry with accompanying illustrations that could be easily printed at home. Though I’m not a poet myself, I found those publications to radiate community and solidarity between poets and artists in a way no other text did (at the time, at least. I was only 8 years old and my world only stretched as far as the TDSB.) I hope this project pays hommage to those books, the things and people who inspire us to create, and the teachers who encourage young creatives to carve out places for their work.

The theme is based on an assignment I had in my third year of studying illustration: a series of works based on “space.” At the time I realized this project was too ambitious in scale and couldn’t fit the timeline I had, and so it sat on the back burner for a year until mid-2025, when I graduated.

Thank you to everyone who supported and continues to support my work, thank you to my professors, teachers and instructors of twelve long years of education. And of course, the utmost thanks to those who submitted their poetry, thank you for being the soul of this project!
